Eat, See, & Do Series: Austin Area

Reading Time: 3 minutes

Known by outsiders as the land of cowboys, barbeque, and football, the great state of Texas has much more to offer its visitors and long-time residents. More specifically, the city of Austin has numerous streets to explore and many experiences to be had. Hailed as one of the more health-conscious cities, Austin boasts a temperate climate, averaging about 300 days of sunshine each year – perfect to get out and get going. Here a few things eat, see, and do while in Austin.

EAT: Indulge like a true Texan at Franklin Barbecue! Residents of The Arnold are only a few blocks away from the mouth-watering smell of brisket, ribs, and pulled pork. Guest can choose to purchase menu items by the pound or as a sandwich option. And whatever you do, don’t skip dessert. From Bourbon Banana to Pecan pie, there is something to satisfy every sweet tooth. Don’t have time to stop in? Grab your reading glasses and pick up the “meat smoking manifesto” by owner and head chef, Aaron Franklin, or tune into his show, BBQ with Franklin, on PBS.

SEE: Whether you are new to the area or a long-time Austinite, you’ve probably heard the term “bat season” thrown around a few times. Roughly 750,000 bats call the underside of the Congress Avenue Bridge home from March to November. Every evening, the Mexican free-tailed bats emerge together like “a giant cloud” and head east. The southeast side of the Congress Bridge is free, open to the public, and is one of the best spots to catch a glimpse of the largest urban bat colony in North America. Residents of Cole apartments are just a short drive away from this spectacular sight.
