Help Out After Harvey: 3 Ways To Donate

Reading Time: 2 minutes

In the aftermath of Hurricane Harvey, the residents of Texas have pulled together and shown that there is indeed strength in numbers. Whether you’re near or far, organizations around the country have set up different ways to help the victims of this devastating event. The LPC team created a YouCaring page to help our Houston residents, with all donations going towards the costs of supplies, shelter, and food for our displaced neighbors. If you’re looking for other ways to give back and support the Houston community, here are several ways to help those affected.

Donate Food: During natural disasters, food banks are extremely important as they provide relief for families and residents who do not have immediate access to food and water. If you’re looking to donate, contact the Houston Food Bank or another branch in the area. Many items are needed including pop-top (canned) meat, vegetables, cereal, and powdered milk. Cleaning supplies such as paper towels and bleach are accepted.

Donate Your Time: If you are in the Texas area and are physically able, many organizations are looking for people to donate their time and skills. The Red Cross is currently looking for musicians to play and keep spirits lifted at the Austin-area shelters, in addition to mental health and medical professionals to help at the local shelters.

Donate Animal Supplies: In addition to the thousands of people affected, there are many furry friends that are also in need. If you are in the Texas area, the SPCA of Texas is in search of temporary foster homes for displaced pets. There are also many other groups, such as the Houston Humane Society, that are accepting monetary donations as well as various pet supplies including dog food, cat food, and pet beds.
